2004 CDF E-Log -- Eve shift. Thu Feb 12, 2004

Start of Shift Notes:

Lum = 22e30
Stack = 42 mA

We plan to sit and take data. Everything is running smoothly right now.

Thu Feb 12 17:05:57 updated plan from run coordinator:
16:06:03- The Plan: If the store stays in, Terminate it after the average luminosity reaches 10E30 (this should be tomorrow morning). We will decide whether or not to make the access to change the cryostat vacuum pumps. Depending on the decision, Tevatron studies will either immediately follow the store or the access. If the store falls out early, call in the vacuum techs to change the pumps and start Tevatron studies after the access.

At the end of the store tomorrow morning, as a response to the COT aging problem, COT experts will turn off inner superlayers and lower HV for others. This will stay in effect for the near future. When they are done, XFT should be paged to mask off layer 2. This work will take priority, but if other tests can be done in parallel, they can proceed as planned.

procmon went mostly grey for some reason. Natasha restarted it. All seems to be fine
now.

Hourly plots showing an apparent network glitch (?) for variables coming from CDF logger, at
around 18:42.

Proton abort gaps are steadily rising, we may get into silicon warning state soon.

Thu Feb 12 20:59:13 Something the shift crew was interested in knowing is roughly how low does the luminosity have to get so that the dynamic prescales all drop to their lowest values. Worded differently, as luminosity drops dynamic prescaling keeps L2/L3 accepts at around roughly the same rate. At some point luminosity gets so low we see a steady drop in L2/L3 accepts rate because dynamic prescaling hits rock-bottom. Roughly what luminosity does this start to happen? - Tom
-- Thu Feb 12 21:48:33 comment by...KPitts --  With the prescale limits we have been running for the last few weeks, the last L1 prescale drops to unity at a luminosity of about 22E30. The L2 prescales all drop to unity before this, typically at a luminosity of about 25-28E30. [It can vary a bit run-to-run depending upon the luminosity when DPS was enabled.]

This means that we are not fully utilizing the available bandwidth at lower luminosity. Given that we still accumulate a significant amount of luminosity with Linst<28E30, we can do better with bandwidth utilization. [There is good physics out there that we aren't writing to tape.]

SILICON WARNING - Proton abort gaps are around 15kHz and TeVMon keeps giving us warnings.
Antiproton losses are somewhat spikey.

-- Thu Feb 12 21:22:28 comment by...natasha --  These are the 2VDOIM and 5VDOIM history plots for the ISL channel that tripped earlier during the shift, as requested by expert. I do not know how to acces history for the time of the trip.
Thu Feb 12 21:34:09 A warning condition appeared on the CEM high voltage monitoring page. A single channel was indicated as being off by ~200 volts at phi=6, eta=-9. I paged the expert (Nickolay) and was advised that there is a history of fake readings. The YMON plots show nothing outstanding for this channel. We will continue to watch it. - Lukens :: (run 179055)
-- Thu Feb 12 22:55:53 comment by...Lukens --  It's the tube labeled "R". We now suspect we may be seeing reduced occupancy in the YMON plot, but it's not definite or obvious.
Thu Feb 12 21:36:09 CEM turned yellow in global alarms page,a nd also on HV summary. Wedge 6(phi) -9(eta) is blinking red and says: HV Set: 1022, HV Diff 216. However the YMon plot of the pmt's doesn't show anything. We paged the expert and he said that it may be a problem with readout, and that any real problem should be visible in YMon. We'll keep watching the cell in the YMon plot.  - natasha

-- Thu Feb 12 22:55:35 comment by...natasha --  Spikes seen in both proton and antiproton losses. B0PBSM had an enormous spike that went over 33e6 Hz according to the ACNET (is this possible?)
Thu Feb 12 22:57:23 After another readout cycle, the bad CEM PMT is still marked red, global alarms claim the voltage discrepancy is still of the same order (200V). Still nothing in YMon plots. - natasha
Thu Feb 12 23:03:00 Another PSM alarm just like the previous one -- 11RR18D; cleared itself in less than a minute. - natasha

During Collimators being moved I accidently turned CLC off while turning the respective HV to
standby, so you'll see a hole in the luminosity plot. Sorry, my mistake.

A quiet shift of steady data collection. We went down
for a collimator move. We also saw one questionable CEM phototube. Experts should look into
this.
