Here are a few problems/questions: 1) The user guide and web setup assume I'm on gobi, which is a Sun workstation. I'm used to SGI/b0sgh. Which should I use? It seems like this should be item 1 in the user guide. 2) Am I supposed to use the provided script or not? It seems the userguide is explaining a small part of the script, then at some unspecified point it goes beyond the script. I could go into many examples of #2, and other problems. But here is my global suggestion for the users guide and web page::: a) #1 Under "Getting Started" you say "If on machine A download script setup_cdfvme_machineA. Then edit this file to put your directory in place of YOURDIR in the script. Then source this script." b) #2 Under "Getting Started" is whatever I'm supposed to do after step #1. Steve --------- My response (S Nahn)----- In fact, I didn't keep my exact response to Steve, but I recall the gist of it. Right now there is no perfect machine to use, gobi has most of what you need, but not ups v4.0, and b0sgz is getting close to having most of what you need. b0sgh is not recommended - you will see harmless bugs related to java v1.1.3, the latest version available there, which are fixed in java 1.1.5 and greater. Related to all this is why we don't have setup stuff for different machines. We can't predict how each machine is configured, especially including non-b0 or FCC machines, or NT PCs. So, the script I provided is an example, to see what you must have, but it is not guarenteed to work on any given machine. Similarly the make files turn out to be machine dependent, so look at those (in particular, the expected environmental variable GCC_EXEC_PREFIX) if you are having trouble compiling. We'll also take a look at the Userguide with Steve's suggestions in mind. SN June 22, 1998
